The smallest change in the bore/ inner diameter/ wall thickness of a bow or neck can make a HUGE difference in how a sax sounds. Play two saxophones (well set up) from the late 1930's and make some notes on what you felt behind the horn. Sometimes, people actually beat the system.I suspect that is true. Most modern pads have some degree of waterproofing (and sealing of any porosity - apart from kangaroo pads). When badly done it is sticky; when well done it is not stick, and it is very successful. This means that, in the hypothetical two-model system, it wouldn't be possible to buy, say, a new silver-plated Selmer horn without springing for a Supreme. For a tenor, that would mean close to $12k. I think Selmer would want to avoid such a costly constriction of choice.
